Gilt metal brazier with pierced lid and shovel
This gilt metal brazier features an imposing circular structure, consisting of a stepped tray, a central bowl, and a domed pierced cover. The piece also retains a metal shovel, a traditional accessory used for handling embers.
Its diameter of 58.5 cm gives it a striking scale. It can be displayed closed, showcasing the work on the lid, or open to reveal the interior bowl and present its various components.
History, design and decorative value
The gilt metal brazier follows the traditional typology of a vessel designed to hold embers for warmth. Its design incorporates a pierced cover and a shovel for moving or collecting the contents.
The combination of bowl, perforated cover, and shovel is documented in Spanish collections of decorative arts. However, this piece cannot be attributed to a specific era, manufacturer, or workshop due to the lack of marks or documentation.
The composition combines smooth, polished surfaces with profusely perforated areas. The central cover features repetitive, plant-inspired and geometric fretwork, finished with a small vertical ring.
The wide, stepped base incorporates two side handles and three decorative feet. These elements allow the piece to be appreciated as both a historical functional object and a work of ornamental metalwork.
In contemporary decor, the gilt metal brazier can be used as a centerpiece in a living room, entryway, library, or establishment with a classic aesthetic. It can also be displayed open, showing the interior bowl, or closed to highlight the pierced work.
Its finish shows intense reflections, small spots, fine scratches, and tone variations consistent with use. The metal alloy, exact gilding technique, dating, manufacturer, and any potential restorations have not been confirmed.
Before using it with embers, its stability, heat resistance, and the condition of the joints must be physically inspected. Until such verification is carried out, it should be considered primarily a decorative and collectible object.
