Antique wooden grain measure
This antique wooden grain measure is an old tool used to measure grain and other dry goods. Its construction fulfills a practical function: an open wooden container, sturdy and built to withstand regular use during measuring tasks.
Today it has lost its daily function, but it retains exactly what makes it interesting as a decorative object: wood marked by time, riveted metal reinforcements, and a simple construction that allows its past to be recognized.
Its dimensions are 24.5 x 48 x H17.5 cm.
From grain measure to decorative piece
The antique wooden grain measure was originally used as a measure of capacity for grain. It was part of the traditional systems used before current metric measurements progressively replaced these tools in commerce and agricultural tasks.
Its shape allowed cereal to be poured into the container and provided a specific amount for measurement. This piece retains the wooden boards, the perimeter metal reinforcements, and an internal crossbar.
It currently serves a very different purpose. It can be placed on a piece of furniture, used as a decorative container, or integrated into a collection of tools and objects related to ancient trades and ways of life.
The irregular texture of the wood, its different tones, and the marks accumulated during use make it unnecessary to add any ornamentation. The construction of the piece itself is its main decorative element.
