Pair of gold-tone metal chambersticks with handle
A pair of gold-tone metal chambersticks, made with the traditional design of this type of candle holder: a circular plate, an elevated candle support, and a small side handle that allows for easy holding and transport.
We currently have 2 units available, so they can be purchased as a pair or used independently.
Each chamberstick measures 11 × 9.5 × H 6.5 cm.
Although they are now attractive as decorative objects, chambersticks originated as household utensils. Their function was very specific: to provide a portable light source using a candle during a time when electric lighting was not yet part of daily life.
What was a chamberstick used for?
The chamberstick allowed for moving around a home while carrying a lit candle from one room to another. Its bottom plate helped catch potential wax drips, while the handle allowed for it to be transported without having to directly touch the hot body of the candle holder.
It was a simple, yet enormously practical object. It could be placed on a nightstand, desk, dresser, or any stable surface and moved when necessary.
The central receptacle held the candle upright and elevated it above the plate. In this way, a single candle could provide a point of light wherever it was needed.
An antique object whose function still makes sense
Electricity made chambersticks no longer necessary for daily lighting, but their original function remains perfectly understandable today.
In addition to being used as decorative candle holders, they can recover their former purpose when auxiliary lighting without electricity is needed, provided they are used with a candle of the appropriate diameter and respecting the precautions typical of any open flame.
And the Great Blackout of 2025 served as a reminder of the value of having alternatives at home that do not depend on the electrical grid.
The blackout of April 28, 2025
On April 28, 2025, at 12:33 PM, the peninsular electrical system suffered a total power failure that left a large part of Spain and Portugal without supply. Red Eléctrica then activated restoration plans to progressively recover service. By 7:00 AM the following day, 99.95% of demand had been restored.
A year later, Red Eléctrica described that episode as unprecedented and noted, based on subsequent official reports, that it had a multifactorial origin.
That day highlighted something very simple: when electricity fails, many of the objects we usually use for lighting depend on batteries or a prior charge.
An alternative to save flashlight batteries
A chamberstick can be useful precisely as a complementary lighting point during a power outage.
A flashlight remains much more appropriate for moving around, looking for objects, or quickly lighting an area. However, if the blackout is prolonged, keeping a flashlight on continuously can drain a battery that might be better saved.
In such a situation, a chamberstick with a candle can provide ambient light at a fixed point while flashlights remain off and available for when they are truly needed.
It can be placed, for example, on a table while several people are in the same room. This way, practically the same use for which this type of object was originally conceived is recovered.
However: a candle should never be left burning unattended, should be kept away from curtains, papers, textiles, children, pets, and flammable materials, and should always be placed on a stable surface.
Circular plate and handle for transport
The design of these chambersticks responds directly to their function.
The central body has a cylindrical housing with a flared edge to receive the candle. Below, we find a base that elevates the point of light.
The entire set is integrated within a circular plate with a raised edge, traditionally intended to protect the surface on which the chamberstick was placed and to catch any wax remnants.
On one side appears the characteristic carrying handle, one of the elements that distinguishes the chamberstick from other types of candlesticks.
The appeal of gold-tone metal
The gold-tone metallic finish gives these pieces a traditional look that fits especially well in classic, rustic, vintage, or eclectic interiors.
The surface reflects both natural light and the light of a candle itself, creating warm glows around the plate and the central support.
The photographs also show marks and surface variations typical of use and the passage of time, which are part of the current appearance of the pieces.
Two units available
We have two chambersticks available, which allows them to be used as a pair.
They can be placed together on a console, sideboard, or table, but also separated and distributed in different points of a room.
An especially practical possibility would be to keep one in the living room and another in another area of the home. In this way, they preserve their daily decorative function and, if the need arises, can be used again as candle holders.
From everyday object to decorative and functional piece
These chambersticks combine two interesting aspects. On one hand, they retain the appeal of an object related to ancient forms of domestic lighting. On the other, their function has not disappeared.
They can be used simply as decorative elements, form part of a composition with other antique objects, or return to holding a candle as they were originally intended.
In an era dominated by electric and rechargeable devices, it is curious to see how such a simple object can continue to fulfill exactly the function for which it was created.

Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is a chamberstick?
A chamberstick is a type of portable candle holder equipped with a plate and a handle. It was used to carry a lit candle from one place to another and provide lighting wherever it was needed.
What was it used for in the past?
Its main function was to provide domestic lighting. Before the spread of electricity, it allowed for carrying a candle through the different rooms of a home.
Why does it have a plate around it?
The plate helps isolate the candle from the surface on which it is placed and can catch some of the wax that drips during combustion.
What is the side handle for?
It allows for holding and transporting the chamberstick with greater comfort, a feature directly related to its historical use as portable lighting.
Can it be used again with a candle?
By its design, it is conceived as a candle holder. Before using it, ensure that the candle fits stably and securely in the housing.
Can it be useful during a blackout?
It can provide a fixed light point without consuming batteries. This allows flashlights to be reserved for moving around or other situations where they are more necessary. A candle should always be used under supervision and following standard fire safety precautions.
Are they sold together?
There are 2 units available. Availability should be reflected on Shopify according to the chosen sales method for both pieces.
Do both have the same design?
In the photographs, both present the same general design: circular plate, central candle support, and side handle.
How big is each chamberstick?
Each unit measures 11 cm × 9.5 cm × 6.5 cm in height.
