Antique Castilian wooden flagstaff | 219.5 cm

Antique Castilian wooden standard holder, 219.5 cm

This antique Castilian wooden standard holder preserves a structure originally created for a very specific purpose: to provide a stable and organized support for different poles or rods. Measuring 219.5 x 50.5 x H100 cm, it stands out for its elongated proportions, the series of perforations of different sizes, and its side supports with curved profiles.

Today it should be understood primarily as a decorative relic and collector's item, retaining the constructive features that explain its former function. Its format also allows for the recovery of part of that original role in a way adapted to the present: it can be used as a display element for poles, standard reproductions, or other collector's items compatible with its supports, always checking measurements, stability, and weight beforehand.

For those looking for furniture with a related aesthetic, you can browse the selection of Castilian furniture from Cositas Antiguas, currently consisting of different pieces from this line.

From functional pole support to decorative relic

The configuration of the piece helps to understand its function.

Along its crossbars appear numerous holes of different diameters. They are not concentrated only in the upper part: there are perforations at several levels and also in the long lower crossbar.

This arrangement provided different support points to keep the rods inserted into the structure organized and separated. The length of the piece also allowed several of them to be arranged simultaneously.

It is important not to go beyond what we can demonstrate. Based on its typology, we identify it as a standard holder, but we do not have documentation that allows us to state which standards it held, where it was installed, who manufactured it, or to which institution it belonged.

The structure is accompanied by sober yet clearly visible decoration. The sides feature sinuous profiles and areas carved with vegetal-like motifs. We also find curved finishes at the ends and moldings running along some of the long crossbars.

Its dark finish leaves visible the texture of the wood, the surface irregularities, and various marks accumulated during its use.

Within the Cositas Antiguas catalog, it can be combined conceptually with other traditional furniture, such as this antique Castilian carved wooden table with drawers, which shares the use of dark wood, carving, and structural elements typical of Castilian furniture.

A historic piece that now finds a new exhibition function

Its original daily function no longer has to be the main reason to acquire it.

In a contemporary interior, this standard holder works above all as a decorative piece, collector's item, and display element. Its more than two-meter length gives it a considerable presence, so it needs adequate space to be able to contemplate its entire structure.

It can also partially recover its purpose through an exhibition setup. For example, it could be used to present poles, flag or standard reproductions, rods, and other vertical collector's elements, provided that their dimensions and weight are suitable for the existing structure.

This is especially interesting for collectors, interior design projects, themed spaces, or environments where one wants to display an antique piece while preserving a visual reference to its function.

We do not recommend modifying or drilling the structure to adapt it to new objects. The reasonable approach is to take advantage of the existing holes and study the compatibility of any element intended for display on an individual basis.

To complete an environment of traditional furniture, you can also see the Castilian carved wooden shelf table, currently available and also proposed as an auxiliary piece of furniture and display unit.

A standard holder that deserves to be preserved as a testament to its former function

One of the most interesting qualities of this object is precisely that its structure continues to explain what it was built for. Even without the poles and standards that originally completed the set, the succession of perforations, the different levels of support, and its large dimensions allow us to understand its functional character.

For this reason, I would not present it as a simple transformed decorative piece. It is preferable to preserve its identity as an antique standard holder, even though its main value today is decorative and exhibition-based.

It can become a protagonist piece in a private collection, an exhibition space, or an interior design project related to traditional furniture. And for those who want to display vertical objects in it again, the structure offers the possibility of visually recovering part of its former purpose without needing to convert it back into an object of institutional use.

As it is an antique piece, only this unit is available.

Frequently asked questions

What was this standard holder originally used for?
Its structure is designed to receive and organize poles or rods in a vertical position. The different perforated crossbars provide several points of attachment and separation.

Is it known which standards were placed on it?
No. We do not have documentation, inscriptions, or visible elements that allow us to associate it with specific standards or a particular institution.

Can it be used as a standard holder again?
We currently consider it primarily a decorative and exhibition piece. It can partially recover its function to display poles, reproductions, or other compatible objects, but diameter, weight, and stability must be checked individually before using them.

What are its measurements?
Its measurements are 219.5 cm long x 50.5 cm deep x 100 cm high.

Does it show signs of age and use?
Yes. In the photographs, wear, marks, irregularities, and finish loss are visible. It is not advisable to hide them during the sale because they are part of the current state of the object.
